While in seventh grade, Cooper was in an accident resulting in 2nd and 3rd degree burns to 12% of his body as well as 20 surgeries. His experience inspired him to create a support system for underprivileged children in Bangladesh who suffer burns and are deprived of access to vital medical support. Cooper travels to Dhaka to provide in-person logistical assistance, and leads a dedicated team in Connecticut to promulgate burn prevention education and fundraise.
At Burn Support Bangladesh (BSB), our team of twenty volunteers in Connecticut and 8 volunteers in Dhaka work hard to help remedy global health inequality. We engage in burn prevention education and we provide vital burn medical support through our partnership with Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (SHNIBPS). To date, fifty-two underprivileged children have received burn medical treatment due to our fundraising efforts.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 173,000 underprivileged Bangladeshi children suffer serious burns each year. These children commonly experience burns in domestic kitchens from the hot liquid or flames of overturned receptacles and from cookstove explosions; they also suffer electrical burns, with children under five years of age being the most vulnerable group. Proper medical care is not within reach of most Bengali children. There is only one major government hospital that treats burn victims in Bangladesh. It is located in the capital city of Dhaka. Burn survivors from across the country travel to this hospital which overwhelms the medical staff and the facility. Most survivors are very poor, and the travel and living expenses push their families into greater poverty. Post-hospital care is also not within their means, but it is critical for a successful infection-free recovery. Proper post-care is also important to help minimize scarring and disfigurement. We provide children with monetary support for the many rehabilitation steps after their injury. We have a network of volunteers in place to reach the children who need support the most.
